December 15 - Australian Christmas Plants

So often our cards and decorations depict things that belong to other countries. However, in Australia a much more distinct reminder of Christmas is the smell of ripening mangoes, the taste of juicy cherries and cool watermelon, or the sight of Christmas Bush and Christmas Bells with which we can fill our vases. The sound of the Koel greets the morning as they migrate here from Indonesia and we are often deafened by the din of cicadas as they emerge in the summer heat.

Things to do

  • Make your gift tags. Try making some with pressed flowers.

  • Sing a song...
Christmas Bush - J. Wheeler and W.G. James

All the bells are gaily ringing
Birds in every tree are singing
Let us in the golden weather
Gather Christmas Bush together.

Christ is born! The angels thunder
Through the Heavens their tale of wonder
While we pluck for His adorning
Christmas Bush this hallowed morning.

Christ has conquered Evil's power
Hear the bells rock every tower
Birds and beasts lift up their voices
Freed at last the world rejoices.

Onward with triumphant chorus
Following the road before us
Singing through the golden weather
Gathering Christmas Bush together.
