Saturday 17 August
As we did not plan to leave for our sightseeing until 9:45 we had a very relaxed morning of breakfast, coffee and chats together.
Then we were off to a "Patchwork of Flowers" exhibition at Aylestry. As we got closer the signs changed to "Flower Show" and then we could not find it anyway in a very small village so we quickly gave up and went to Croft Castle.
We arrived just in time to take the Taster Tour which took us through just a few very huge rooms and the gallery. Then there was a walk into the little church of St Michael and All Angels at Croft Castle.
The grounds and walled garden interested us all for some time with lots of apple trees, Cox's Orange Pippins, a small vinyard, figs, lots of vegies as well as flowers for cutting.
We left at about noon and headed for Jane's cottage at Highley driving via Clee Hill where there were fantastic views of the country to the south and west. We could even see the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons in Wales near where we'll be heading on Monday.
We arrived at Highley at about 1pm just before Kiran and Pete. We had lunch together and spent the afternoon chatting and showing quilts. The weather was particularly cold and wet so we were limited in our movements but had a great time socialising anyway.
After the others had left at about 6:30pm Jane, Elaine and I had dinner together then had an airing of more of Jane's quilts. As the light left the sky we caught up on diaries and then crawled into our beds listening to the last of the steam trains pass by.
Sunday 18 August
Woke this morning after a reasonable sleep although Elaine's was not good. After breakfast we walked south along the Severn River and back to Highley Station to watch for trains on the Severn Valley Railway. Unfortunately it was only a deisel engine this time.
We then packed and headed for Wolverhampton. On the way we diverted to Hampton Loade to find both the deisel and the steam train both at the station.
We walked down to the foot ferry, rescuing a legless lizard from the road on the way. The ferry was not working so we walked back to the car and just drove on to Wolverhampton.
Elaine and I were pleased to have the rest of the afternoon to pack and sort, update the blog and backup our photos before heading to Bron and Denis's for our last dinner with all our Wolves friends.
The world is ever changing, leading us down new paths, in new directions. We can allow the past to guide us forward but turning back is not an option. While Surrey's loss has left a profound sadness and emptiness in my world I am excited about my new adventures. Follow me here on my journey.
