This morning Ian, Dianne and I were up at 5:30 am to have a quick breakfast, pack our few things then into the bus to drive north to collect our first two fellow travellers, Jessica and Simon, at Launceston airport.
Then there was a quick tour of Launceston as we picked up the other travellers at their various hotels - Lynda, Helen, David, Pam (who came last year and to the Kimberley) and Joy.
Our long drive then took us across the north coast of Tasmania eventually stopping at Wynyard to collect our lunch. We found shade in the park to eat it while we watched the water. On then to Fossil Bluff where, as the tide was quite low, we could really see the shell fossils and the various layers they came from. They are mostly 500 million year old molluscs and bivalves.
On again to Arthur River to find our home for the next week; meet the scientists, Menna, Chris, Gini, and Sebastian; and find Paul (who also came last year) and Gail organising our supplies.
On a walk to the Edge of the World we discovered footprints of Tasmanian Devils and Pademelons on the beach and I was able to photograph one of the plants I was unsure of last year.
Back to the house to make icky sticky bait balls for the traps in the morning then have dinner and listen to our first talk by Menna giving us an overview of the issues with Tasmanian Devils and the research being done all over the world both with the DFTD cancer and the effects of top predator extinction.
