Hobart with Julie - Day 1

Sunday 13 March
This morning Julie came to collect me at 9 am before Ian and Gail were up. We started driving to the Mt Nelson Signal Station but Julie decided that with the thick fog (known as the Bayswater Jerry) it would be better to go to the Botanical Gardens first while the fog lifted.

The Garden is quite beautiful and much more compact than Sydney's. There is a peaceful Japanese Garden, and extremely cold sub-antarctic house, a moist dark fernery and of course the famous vegetable garden. There seemed to be a lot of fruit and vegetables going to waste in the garden, just left on the ground to rot, even the quinces!

We enjoyed a great devonshire tea (with hot fresh scones) during our walk and visited the shop for a few minutes.

Our next jaunt was back up to the Mt Nelson Signal Station lookout and restaurant. Our fish for lunch was delicious and our table looked down over the Derwent River towards Opossum Bay. We could watch the fog move around and eventually lift entirely.

As we were leaving we met Menna and her family out walking their dog so introductions were made and we chatted for a bit. I was wearing a skirt and top and she had trouble recognising me in a "frock".

Julie then took me for a drive down the South Arm to Opossum Bay calling into the various bays and beaches on the way. It is very much the place for a beach holiday if you live in Hobart.

Back via the new Hill Street Grocers for a few supplies then home to a very excited dog, Boots, who Julie is minding at the moment. We took Boots for a walk then spent the evening sipping pinacoladas on the deck then lazing inside over dinner and a bit of TV
