Thursday 10 August - Longreach
I had the luxury of sleeping in until 7am today after a very cold night. Breakfast in my room (waffles) then time to think about activities for the day.
After the longish walk to town my first stop was a hairdresser who could fit me in for a cut. I now feel much tidier and it is a nicer cut than I get at home. What a pity I can't get back easily!
Then I trolled the shops to find comfy jeans. I found a pair and hope that if they are good I can get them online or at home.
I found a leaflet about one and two day flights over Lake Eyre - how fantastic that would be but I think it might just be too hard to cram it in and I've already paid for accommodation here.
After window shopping and actually going into lots of shops (unusual for me) I had lunch at a cafe. In my wanderings I noticed the Landmark shop and asked about some plant posters by Landcare that I'd seen in Winton on my previous trip. They rang around and suggested I visit Desert Connections Resource Centre who in turn suggested the agronomist at DPI (now called DAF - Dept. of Agriculture and Fisheries) who had written books on plants for the area. This meant I had to ring the taxi (the lovely Judy I'd had from the train) who took me the 4.5 km out of town to the DAF office. The ladies there were most helpful. I'd just missed Jenny (the agronomist) by about 10 minutes as she had flown out today but I was able to buy one of her books.
Another call to Judy and I returned to the motel to sit for a while and drop my shopping before I walked to town again to the IGA to buy some cheese, crackers, fruit and yoghurt for dinner and breakfast.
The evening (after almost 13000 steps and two taxi rides) was spent blogging and sorting photos. I spent some time reading up on what I can do tomorrow.
After my yummy dinner I watched a bit of TV and did two 'killer sudoku' before bed.
The world is ever changing, leading us down new paths, in new directions. We can allow the past to guide us forward but turning back is not an option. While Surrey's loss has left a profound sadness and emptiness in my world I am excited about my new adventures. Follow me here on my journey.
