Top End Travels - Pungalina to Adels Grove

Friday 31 May 2019 (D to E on the map)

After a very windy night and clouds from the gulf we drove out of Pungalina to head east again. We took the very long road out with either thick sand or lots of rocks.

We had morning tea at the turnoff on the main road 64km later at the front gate. Karen pointed out an acacia that had flattened cladodes and was quite interesting. There were a few more plants at the intersection that held my attention too.

We made a quick stop soon after at the Qld-NT border where we all changed watches and camera time then hit bits of bitumen along the mostly dirt road.

Lunch was a hamburger at the Hells Gate Roadhouse. We also met the bus taking the tour from Cairns to Darwin at the roadhouse.

There was another brief stop to see Hells Gate itself.

At Doomagee we had to stop for fuel and bus supplies which meant I could at last text and email Geoff to pay my Telstra bill that was due. It is ironic that I could not pay Telstra because I had been almost a week without a Telstra connection. Before we left Doomagee Geoff had texted me that it was all paid. Phew!

Driving out I was impressed by the very wide Nicholson River that had a weir right across it to hold back water for the town.

We were then back to lots of Triodia and also saw Jabiru, wallabies and some Wedge-tailed Eagles.

At about 5:30 we pulled in to Adels Grove for the night. After dumping my gear in my room I raced to the information centre to find a map but had to actually ask for guidance. I was sent on a lovely walk through The Grove with huge trees (many of which were planted by Albert de Lestang after whom the area is named) and lots of water lilies in the Lawn Hill Creek.

Back for dinner just on dark.
